b'Running the RaceThe Correct Approach to the Money Barrelup your run even though you took a different path so you By Betsy Nunn could get around the first in a hurry to set up your second howfastdouwannab@gmail.com, facebook.com/Willnunnp3, youtube.com/user/howfastdouwannab which came up quick!S omeone posed the question,#2 WideDenver is a narrow pen so you would hook it down the left side of the alley and go to the same spot in the ground as well Whats the best approach toto slip around it and have the proper exit to the second. Its the money barrel? And tobasically a figure eight from the first to the second.that, you may ask, What is the money barrel? Lets talk aboutWhats the correct entry point? Its where your paths meet that today. As we all know there are many ways to get to anat your entry and your exit. I call it your X, super simple expected end, but whats the best way? What is our initialdeal. Obviously on a horse with lots of rate, you would ride path to our entry at the first barrel? It is supposedly calledreal loose and two-handed not pulling on the outside rein the "Money Barrel", to which I would agree, in fact it can setat your entry spot or as I call it your X. A real free horse you up your entire run for success. In other words every actionwould ride to the same entry /X and sit down coming to the has an equal and opposite reaction and as the Good BookX. Betsy, do you kick to the first? No! I do not! What about says you reap what you sow. on a very ratey horse? No! I do not! Let me explain. Those of you who rope will understand me. When you run up on #1 a calf and you are riding a really tight horse do you lean out There are folks that like to go super straight to their point / X (where your paths cross on the ground)over the top and kick and show her a lot of rope? Well, at or your entry as they believe they are covering less groundthat point you may not even get to throw your rope because by getting straight to their point/ X /entry. Its more of ayour horse is reading your mail and about to fling you over 360-degree turn, instead of a running turn where a horsesthe front end. It can be painful at times! This is what happens feet are allowed to still really move and run around that turn. Plus, I think its a little trickier to get a clean exit and a smooth diagonal across to your second entry and on and on it goes.#3 Happy Medium (Betsy\'s Fave)Ultimately we want to have all three turns very similar and fast. #1 Straightbought horses that were a half or full second off consistently. By tweaking their approach to the first barrel and thereby changing their entry and exit we have changed their patterns ever so slightly. To the untrained eye, folks may wonder what I did to make those horses winners.I understand what I did because it was part of my plan and program. So how do you go to the first Betsy? (And not that I have won everything there is to win). I have just ridden and trained a pile of them in my lifetime and was a jump rider before we knew that phrase. I am forever trying to learn and humble myself to Gods process in my life and in my horse training. As my dad said, You can learn by watching and listening. Sometimes its what you want to do, Betsy and sometimes its what you do not want to do. Such is life my friend, such is life. Its just discerning what path is best.when you kick the dog out of a horse heading to your barrels/1st barrel. Then they lean on you and cut across the #3first quarter of your turn and mess up your entry. Your horse I am basically a happy medium person as I start a few feet to the right of my third and always go to thehas to step out or away from your turn as you exit and that #2same spot on the ground. I try to always have the same entrysets up the second entry incorrectly. Or your horse comes Other individuals like a wider path and entry to the first where they literally line up with the third barrel, and to follow the same path around the barrel and that setshard over his back end and hits it, leaving the barrel. Plus five covering more ground than the rest.up my clean exit. seconds my friends! No money! I know you cannot put every horse in a box so I am not sayingWell, what if the setup is off-center to the first? Some folksThere are many ways to accomplish the first barrel or the you are wrong if you have figured out the best and fastest waythink when they set a pattern that if they center the thirdmoney barrel but there is a way to set up your whole run to for your horse to work. We have to ride for our horse, not ourwith the right-hand post of the alley that thats center. Reallybe faster, cleaner and smoother than the rest. I love the first set standards in our mind as to how this horse should work.center is literally the middle of that alley so both righties andbarrel. Its my favorite turn. I think its my horses favorite In my mind every horse is a bit different but for the most partlefties have the same go to the first. They dont realize whenturn as well. I hope this helps you out on your next run! I try to make my path and approach pretty similar on all ofthey set the pattern that they are making a straighter shot for them, as it sets up the rest of my run for success, hopefully!!the rightie and a wider shot for the leftie. They might need toLet me know if you have any questions. I also have a business And for most of us we understand what we are riding at therun down the left side of the alley on a rightie but always topage called BarNunn Barrel Horses in P3 Farrier. You can moment and what our goals are for that horse for that daythe same entry spot. like it, watch some interesting things and hopefully learn in the arena. I think the pattern you set can make or breaksomething new. whether you win something that day. It decides whetherSan Antonio used to make you literally go from the opposite you are a half-second off where you want to be. We haveside of the arena. You would go to that same entry spot to setI wish you Ephesians 3:14- 21 52 December 2019'
