Livestock Judging ContestBy Kris Johnson, Odyssey 4-H Livestock Judging Coachextension.arizona.edu/4h and extension.arizona.edu/4h/maricopaT his past summer (June 2020) seven members of Odyssey 4H competed in a virtual livestock judging contest with other youth from the Four Corner States (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah). Youth judged 10 classes of livestock and videoed their oral reasons (explanation on why animals were placed in that order) on three of those classes. Contestants viewed a class of four animals (all the same species, typically all of the same age), for example, a class of Angus Bulls or Market Lambs. They then judged, or ranked those, from best to worst, based on industry standards. Contestants judged the classes virtually, submitted their placings, took notes on the classes, then prepared and presented their reasons to a family member who was videoing them. Those videos were then uploaded, viewed, and scored by committee organizers. Placings and reasons scores were tabulated, and winners were announced via Facebook. We are Your own personal Weddingproud to announce that the youngest member of the group, Coordinator handles EVERYTHINGKaden Benninghoff, placed 3rd high novice in the competition.
