In that part of Texas Office: 651-796-3589 terrain with a steep slope, lots of loose soil and material is considered a bluff. One day a Cell: 651-321-3899 rancher called me to ask if I could help him and other cowboys round up his cattle, work them, as well as wean them. Trooper and I had worked cattle on ranches with lots of bluffs, TimMortonInsurance.com Tim Morton but this ranch was closer to the river and the terrain was deeper and steeper. I had used Trooper on several ranches with this type of ground and I was confident that it would be no issue for him to handle it. The rancher asked me to be there at sunup so I got up early, loaded Trooper, and headed to the ranch. I got to the location, unloaded, and saddled Trooper, tied him to the trailer and gathered around the rancher to get directions on how we were going to push the cattle and round them up. As he started to talk, I heard the noise of what sounded like a large trailer. I looked over my shoulder and sure enough, there was a truck pulling a large trailer with a helicopter on it. The rancher said, Good, theres the helicopter. Now, I had never used Trooper in gathering cattle with the help of a helicopter before, but I was confident that he would be just fine. We made the first pass and pushed cattle to the pen, but the helicopter was never really close to us, so things were going great. The pilot said he saw a good size bunch of cattle in a deep bluff and he wanted to push them up the draw. He said for us to stay on top of the bluff and when cattle came up we were to help turn them towards the right in the direction of the pens. Trooper and I were sitting on top of the NEW ASPHALT PAVING bluff as instructed. I could see the helicopter pilot maneuvering back and forth and then I saw the cattlePARKING LOTS coming directly towards us. I was able to tell that by the direction the helicopter was flyingPRIVATE DRIVES that he was going to pass right over us. I pulled my hat down a little lower to my ears and was expecting the unexpected because a helicopter had never flown over us at such a low altitude.ROADS I moved a little to the left get to away from the trail as those cattle started coming up the bluff. They saw me. I was talking to the cows and starting to turn them towards pens at about REPAIRS & MAINTENANCE the same time that helicopter flew right over us. Trooper did not flinch. I remember taking a deep breath and letting it out. At that same time, the helicopter shadow went right underTRENCH PAVING us. Trooper must have jumped ten feet in the air, and then he hit the ground and came up a second time. My pant pocket and the saddle met somewhere in between the jumps. TrooperPATCHINGOVERLAYS had a really soft mouth, so I kept talking to him, gently got control, and we continued toSEAL COATING push the cattle to the pens. All was good after the shadow episode. I didnt quit on Trooper and he was fine afterward. How many times do we worry about things that may not happen?
