October 2017 4 HOLD TIGHT AND LET’R RIP TATOR CHIP…a rodeo slogan I’ve heard Pro Rodeo announcer Dan Fowlie say many times. It’s also applicable towards what happens in Arizona starting now and continuing through April. There are more events, during the next six months, than Carter has pills. That’s another one of those sayings I picked up from my folks, but have no idea of its origin. There is so much entertainment to check out and it’s all happening in Arizona. We also will see an influx of winter visitors during the next six months. Some just trying to stay warm and others traveling from different countries to experience all that Arizona has to offer. Why do folks travel to Arizona, besides the great winter weather? Yep, I googled it and it’s no surprise the Grand Canyon was the number one reason. The rest of the top five reasons to visit Arizona were no surprise either. They include the Sonoran Desert, the Old West, ancient history and outdoor activities. We drive to work every day, not thinking about all that surrounds us. Last year, I made friends with a family that just moved to Arizona from the South. Every day he took his family on a new experience. Many times I joked with him about slowing down and just enjoying their own backyard. His response was that his backyard had 113,998 square miles of land and he wanted to enjoy it all. Welcome to Arizona, we hope to see you somewhere! Being in Arizona, we are blessed to have some of the best country music artists perform here. WOW! An amazing lineup is coming our way over the next six months. As excited as I am to see these country shows, I am equally saddened that we have to say goodbye to a couple of country stars. A year ago I was fortunate enough to see Don Williams at the Celebrity Theatre. What an amazing voice he had. Don Williams passed away, after a short illness, on September 8, 2017. Just as I was putting a radio tribute together for him, another country artist passed away in a helicopter accident. That artist was Troy Gentry, from the duo Montgomery Gentry. In 2008, I was able to attend and enjoy his great musical talent when Montgomery Gentry played a concert at what is now called Ak-Chin Pavilion. Our prayers are with the families of both.
