My mind started wandering a little while at Gold Rush Days in Wickenburg a few weeks ago. This was the tenth Gold Rush Days that our radio station 96.3 Real Country Legends and I had participated in. The week before that we were at Buckeye Days, the week after we were at the Hellzapoppin Rodeo, next is the Parada del Sol Rodeo, then Cave Creek Rodeo, the Payson Rodeo, and this summer the Prescott Rodeo. There are others we want to attend but conflicts interfere with the dates. So what does all that information have to do with change? Well, my thought is that people from outside Arizona come to Arizona to experience the Old West and people that live in Arizona love to live the western lifestyle and are not looking for a change. That doesn’t mean that going to the Phoenix Symphony or a show at Gammage Auditorium are not an enjoyable time, they are. I love to go, I also like the Butterfly Experience in Scottsdale, Top Golf is fun too and taking the light rail is a treat, especially if you like people watching. All that change to the Old West of Arizona is well and good, but I don’t like it when new arrivals to this great state want to make changes to the way we live, to what we believe and to how we enjoy our Western lifestyle. There is nothing better than Jerry Honeycutt starting a rodeo off with a prayer, and then playing the Canadian national anthem followed by our national anthem. I love it and will remove cover for all out of respect. If I want to go out shooting, I like that I can put my guns in the truck, even on my gun rack in the back window and enjoy the day. I love the language cowboys have that is all their own and the jokes they tell. A cowboy came up to me the other day and said do you know why the cowboy bought a dachshund? No why…. because he was told to “get along little doggy.” I like the friendships that are forged from the Western way of life, even if I have a very hard time remembering names. They’re all my buddies and friends. When working the front gate at Gold Rush Days I try and talk to everyone that shows up. This year someone said to me, are you trying to make friends out here and jokingly I said yes I am doing just that because I have no friends. A little girl about 4 years old looked up at me from under the greatest looking cowgirl hat and said “I’ll be your friend.” Wow, at that moment my heart just melted and that is what I took away as my number one memory from the whole weekend. I met a couple from London at the Flying E Ranch who were here to experience the Old West. Back home he is a brass instrument repairperson and she is a baker. They were in their late 20’s and just wanted to be “cowpokes” for a week. They went on our cattle drive and will take those wonderful Arizona stories back home to England. During our visit, I learned more about London and life as they lead it on a day by day basis. Let's do all we can to keep the Old West alive in Arizona. Please never let that change as the generations go by. Go stand in the rodeo line and make friends. 1 2 Mike Barna, Publisher ArizonaRealCountryMagazine@gmail.com 24 1 6 March 2019 41 28 61
