Have you said that before? These days I say it almost every day. Before you get too far into this, you will not get any political statement here. That is a whole can of corn nuts on its own, no matter what party you believe is correct. One thing I thank God for every day is that I was born in the United States of America. I love this country! Some of the politicians and "news" media not so much. What I am talking about is RESPECT, INTEGRITY, KINDNESS, and AUTHORITY. Maybe those are just words now and they don’t need action to back them up. Is the lack of what those words represent in society new today or has it been missing for years. Maybe the answer to the question “what is going on in the world” is more about an instant connection to others. Back in Roman times AD, it would take years to get news, during Pony Express days it took months and in the 1970’s it was hours, but today… seconds. Can you drive your auto and not look at your cell phone? Really? You can’t drive for five minutes without picking up your phone. One police officer told me many accidents these days are due to being distracted by a cell phone. Here I thought it was driving too fast. Most days I spend between two and three hours on the freeway and the average speed people are driving has to be 80 or better. The act of stopping at a red light and then turning right is a thing of the past, no stop needed anymore by many. Lane changing because it’s your right with no turn signal, that’s the norm. Remember the driver’s manual that said one car length between cars for every ten miles per hour of travel? Where did that rule go? Glen Campbell said, “Try a Little KINDNESS.” The other day I watched a movie called Molly’s Game. It took me three days to watch it because I started one evening and fell asleep, then began where I left off the next night and fell asleep again. Thank goodness Saturday morning I woke up and finished the movie. Maybe I’m back in the so-called “pony express” days, where it takes three days to watch a two-hour movie. Oh well, the whole point of the movie, in my opinion, was that she faired the way she did with the judicial system because of INTEGRITY. I was standing next to someone the other day and they were on their cell phone telling the person they did not have time to write the information down as they were driving down the road. Not the case! We were standing in a restaurant and they were right next to me. I don’t believe there would have been anything wrong with them saying where they were, or better yet, just not answering the phone in the first place. Speaking of AUTHORITY, that can be parents, grandparents, teachers, police, and any person who has been given the power to make decisions or give orders. I was taught to RESPECT all of those mentioned above. From kindergarten to high school I only had two run-ins with AUTHORITY and both were learning lessons at school and at home. Bending over a chair and getting struck with a belt was a quick motivational learning tool. WAIT, you can’t do that today? Maybe we just found part of the cause of the lack of RESPECT. In 5th grade, I found that I could take the top off my pen, throw the pen part up to the ceiling and it would stick in the ceiling. It was amusing to me and the rest of the class but not to my teacher and definitely not to my parents. Needless to say to this day, my pen never gets opened. What is going on in the world? I’m sure you have your thoughts as to how it can be changed, improved, bettered or maybe it’s just fine with you. Whatever you think, you’re part of this world today and what you put into it is what you and those around you will receive from it. Whether you're in a big city or small town, the quality of life you lead is what you make it. One of my favorite sayings is “if it is to be it is up to me.” Thanks for letting me rant. 1 6 Mike Barna, Publisher ArizonaRealCountryMagazine@gmail.com 41
