ArizonaRealCountry.com 47 August 2018 Debbie Pye REMEMBER WHEN??? A group of "older" club members was sitting around talking when one of them said, “Do you remember all the horse shows we used to go to and all the horses we had coming to the shows around here?” Another member spoke up saying, "Those shows were never for me but I remember some of those fun trail rides we used to go on.” “WHERE HAVE ALL THE PERUVIAN PASOS GONE???” was the next question. With that question in mind and in search of some answers, I invited one of our honorary members, Amanda Heady, to go with me to find an "older” Peruvian Horse ranch down near Arizona’s southern border. Since both Amanda and I like a "little adventure", off we started in her Subaru just like on Subaru’s television ad, 4 wheeling across the Arizona desert. We were Thelma and Louise in search of Peruvian Horses and we eventually did find the ranch. The ranch near the border, as shown in the picture, belonged to Oscar Campos and was named "Dona Delia". Oscar began importing Peruvian Horses from Peru approximately 25 years ago and was an active owner/ breeder until his unfortunate passing in 2007. NEWS FROM COPPER STATE PERUVIAN PASO CLUB We also did meet 2 delightful German girls who are students on a working ‘'vacation" from their small town in Germany. They showed us around and we did see some Peruvian Horses in the distance. In speaking with the girls we learned one of them, Deborah Meyer, had a Peruvian Horse in Germany. She had purchased it from an American breeder who had imported the mare’s mother from Argentina. There is a renewed interest in our horses among aficionados in Argentina and in the Peruvian Horses that they are breeding there. We are hoping to engage some of our members in helping us locate the "hidden" Peruvian Horses around Arizona. We would love to hear their stories and have them join us for activities, whether it is trail riding, horse shows or barbecues.  Talk then turned to some pictures recently reproduced by well-known Peruvian Horse photographer Debbie Pye. Here are some photographs of past Peruvian Horse Champions that Debbie has provided for us. They were taken at the 1998 Arizona Regional Show held at the Yuma Fairgrounds.
