DILLONS AT WESTERN TRAILS RANCH O n October 21st, seven riders staged in Wittman at member Vickis home and then met up with member Trish along our route through the desert to Western Trails Ranch in Morristown. There was a water stop on the way that the horses were more than willing to take advantage of since the heat climbed faster on Saturday than was expected. It was an easy ride with some cow tracks riding, some dirt road riding, and even a little cross-country riding. Most of us appreciate the ability to have residential desert areas left to ride in. It is always fun to mix it up sometimes and include lunch on our rides at a true restaurant and not a sack lunch or snack at the trailhead. Jane called in advance to make arrangements since you cannot just show up with horses without permission first. There were no scheduled events in the arena that day, so the Western Trails management was very accommodating and let us tie up our horses in the arena and set us up at a table indoors where we could view our horses from the air-conditioned Dillons BBQ restaurant. We were joined by some non-riding guests as well, so our number grew from 7 to 12 for lunch. Dillons staff was friendly and quick with our entres. As it turned out, it was a semi-unanimous decision that riding back the two-plus hours in the heat of the day was no longer an option for us or our horses. Dwane had driven over with his wifes trailer for that very reason. So, between him and Richard caravanning more horses back from Dillons, we were able to get back quickly to our staging area and get our horses home safely out of the heat. This is kind of an annual event for our group, so we will make a new plan to do it again. Come join us next time!ArizonaRealCountry.com January 2024 71'
