September 2017 18 TACK TRENDS & Paying Your Dues Kim Dillon grew up competing on horseback here in Arizona. As a former Miss Rodeo Arizona and Miss Rodeo America runner-up, Kim enjoys sharing her equestrian love and expertise with others. By Kimmie Dillon Western tack always needs to be functional. And for many, the word “fun” in functional is just as important in making that winning arena run. Here are the Latest in Western Tack Trends: Fringe breast collars continue to dominate this season. Much like a flouncy skirt parading down a fashion runway, these leather pieces are the stylish choice for rodeo competitions. Riders can pair these breast collars with a coordinating bridle or hackamore. Matching leather tack sets are also sizzling right now. Color is big this season and is often complimented with various textures. The pieces are often adorned with Native American patterns, jewels, conchos, tooling, animal-print hide and lacing. If you want a touch of trend without overdoing it, use a felt pad with a leather overlay. These decked-out saddle pads come in everything from exotic hides to pink lame’. Pick your passion! There never seems to be a shortage of creativity when it comes to western design. Supple leather is now being twisted and handcrafted into floral designs for one-of-a-kind pieces. These leather flowers can brighten a bridle or jazz up a breast collar. And once again, fringe adds even more splash to this western tack accessory. Leather feathers are hand painted and punchy with color. I’ve seen everything from a single feather in the upper corner of a bridle to, you guessed it, leather feather fringe along a breast collar. Say that 3 times fast and then say wow! Finally, our 4-legged friends will look special in these personalized halters. They come in a rainbow of colors with flashy conchos and leather tooling. Perfect for your pampering your herd! PAY YOUR DUES In the words of 23-time World Champion Trevor Brazile: “To become the best, you’ve got to work the hardest”.
