b'Elliott (yes, they were at Fallen Timbers too). They begged the 500 or so Indians who rushed past them in pell-mell retreat, to turn around and fight, but to no avail. Soon, the diabolical trio themselves joined the flight to the gates of the British Fort Miami, only to find the gates shut tightly. The British commander, Major Campbell, fearing that Wayne would use any excuse to attack his fort, forbade entry, so the Indians retreated further west, along the Great Lakes, until they were safe from American pursuit. For his part, Wayne did move on Fort Miami, but only in a demonstration. His men were exhausted, he didn\'t have the artillery, nor did he want to risk war with Great Britain. Instead, he rode back and forth along the fort\'s perimeter, mocking its defenders while his men set fire to the fort\'s "bread and butter," the deserted Indian villages nearby. His objectives met, his work completed, he recalled hisTHE TRUMP command to Fort Defiance. The Indians would never come back in a war footing. The militia, for the most part, save those that bolted early in the battle had done well under the intrepid Charles Scott but it was Anthony Wayne\'s regulars, the first REAL AmericanTRAIN DEPOTarmy, the Legion of the United States who proved exceptional - it was they who had won the day for the United States."Anthony Wayne believed two things happened at Fallen Timbers. Obstinate to the end, Blue Jacket and Little Turtle at first refused to come, holding off in the belief that the British would succor the thousands of refugees and moveWelcome Back Cowboys, forward to fight the Americans. But despite the pleas of the ever-faithful Loyalist agents McKee and Girty, quite the opposite was happening. Instead of going to war with America,Ropers & Snowbirdsthe British, then embroiled in a war with Napoleon, were now preparing to cede those northwest forts, including Miami and Detroit, to the Americans. Finally both Blue Jacket and Little Turtle reluctantly "gave up the ghost" and arrived at the fort Wayne had named for his friend and fellow general, Nathaniel Greene.Wayne treated his vanquished foes with courtesy and with honor, something that had been lacking in the earlier negotiations conducted by the discredited St. Clair and the dead Butler - he promised he would rebuild some of the burnt Miami villages and as part of the settlement would provide foodstuffs and warm clothing for the starving Indian refugees, abandoned by the British. As fair as he was though, he also acted with characteristic bluntness, telling the chiefs that the Northwest Territory was lost to them forever, that the Ohio Valley was open to white settlement - not to mention the lands westward to the Mississippi. In the end, the assorted chiefs signed this Treaty of Greene Ville, Little Turtle being the last to sign but also vowing he would never lift up arms against the Americans as long as he lived.
