She and her children, Nick and McKay, accidentally found out about the plight of homeless horses in the United States. Once they found out that over 60,000 horses in this country were sentenced to death each year, they knew they had to do something to help. They rescued horses privately from 1995 until 2000. But even with their efforts, they could not save very many horses. Kim applied for, and received non-profit status for Wildhorse and with the help of many volunteers Wildhorse has been able to save hundreds of horses (all types of equine) from premature death, slaughter, abuse and neglect by providing a safe place for them to live until they are adopted, or for the remainder of their lives. This year they celebrate their 25th anniversary.Equine RescueWild mustangs, all domestic equines, retired US Forest Service equines, US Cavalry horses and any equine in need of help. All cats are spayed/neutered and can be adopted for $85.Water for Horses Program provides lifesaving water for the Gray Mountain wild horses on the Navajo Nation. They also take in orphaned or sick baby horses found on the Navajo Nation. Expenses can run well over $15,000 to save their lives. How do horses become homeless? 85% of first time horse owners give up their horse within 5 years. * Their owners die.* Their owners fall on hard times. * Horses can live over 30 years and many people are not prepared to care for any animal its entire life. * Lame or un-rideable horses almost always end up homeless. * A sport or competitive horse stops winning. * Over breeding by backyard breeders. * Wild horses rounded up. *A horse that is not the right color, confirmation or temperament. * Horses with any type of medical condition and many other reasons that are too numerous to list. What happens to unwanted and surplus horses? They are sold, euthanized or sent to the local auction house and bought by kill buyers. Now, over 90,000 US horses are slaughtered every year in Mexico and Canada. How can you help?Wildhorse is a registered 501(c)3 organization.
