ArizonaRealCountry.com 21 TESTIMONIAL FROM ROB ARNBERGER, FORMER SUPERINTENDENT OF GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK 1994-2000 “It was a fantastic experience, and the canyon weaved its magic for all of us. Canyoneers is a company with a great reputation of caring, and for providing a quality experience. The legacy of this company was with us each day by having the famous Nevills Cataract boat along on the trip… The entire crew demonstrated quality technical competence and educational competence. All of them knew their subject and shared wonderfully. The quality of interpretation of the history and natural history of the canyon was superb. The technical expertise of the boatmen in managing their rafts in challenging, sometimes risky situations, was exemplary. They also demonstrated wonderful sensitivity and a good sense of humor. As you know, we’re not strangers to the canyon or a trip down the river. However, I know we can both safely say that of all the trips we have taken down the river, this was the most enjoyable and rewarding.” –Rob Arnberger and his wife, Vera, Tucson, AZ That’s not so. The first choice dates go first, but you can definitely book for the current season. In 1938, Norm organized and led the first commercial trip down the Colorado River through Grand Canyon, for which he designed and built a new type of craft called a Cataract Boat. The 1938 expedition generated a great deal of national publicity and succeeding expeditions, each of which generated more interest in river expeditions as adventure vacations. During Norm’s lifetime, his Nevills Expeditions carried scores of adventurous passengers down the San Juan, Green, Snake, Salmon and Colorado rivers. At the time of his death in a 1949 plane crash, Norm, then only 41 years old, was widely known as the World’s Number One Whitewater Boatman. WHAT TO BRING & PACK On the river, shorts and t-shirts are the usual wear but other clothing and equipment are necessary, too. A full “bring list” will be supplied to each passenger, but here is some important advance information: A full rainsuit rather than a poncho is recommended. Everyone must have a hat or cap and sunscreen. A small towel and soap — and it must be biodegradable. And a camera with lots of batteries, memory, or film!! WEATHER The inner canyon is a semi-arid desert environment. Temperatures are generally 20° warmer than the canyon rim because it drops nearly a mile in elevation. Weather in May varies. Average temperatures range from a low of 50°F to a high of 82°F. FOOD The big western outdoor meals that have been traditional with Canyoneers have gotten much easier, and even bigger and better through the years. Gone is the expedition-type menu. Our motorized pontoon boats carry fresh and frozen meats, vegetables, desserts, (and a few surprises) that make delicious, multi-course meals our standard daily fare. Your river crew will do the cooking with variety in every meal. RESERVATIONS Reservations for any of our scheduled river trips may be requested by telephone or personal visit to our Flagstaff office.
