BREAKING THE BARRIER – Refers to breaking the rope or electronic eye barrier before it is released. This will add a 10 second penalty on to the contestant’s time. BRIDLE CATCH - A catch where the rope hangs in the steer’s mouth. All bridle catches are considered illegal. CAP - Referring to the maximum handicap classification number that a roper can have in a particular roping. (Example: If a roping is capped at a #3, no roper with a handicap greater than #3 is eligible to compete in the roping). CORRIENTE - Breed of cattle originating in Mexico especially suited for team roping. CROSS FIRE - The heeler has to wait until the header has succeeded in roping and redirecting the steer. Otherwise, the entire team is disqualified. If the legs are roped first, it is considered a cross fire. DALLY - To dally is when the header catches the steer and then wraps the rope around the saddle horn. This is a key move that must be executed properly or it could severely injure the header’s fingers or hand. DOUBLE NUMBERS - A classification whereby a roper has a different classification for heading and heeling. DRAGGER - A steer that drags his hind legs and will not hop. DRAW – means a roper can draw into any division 15 through the 9. If the roper does not have a partner and meets the criteria to draw in, they just turn in the entry card with their name on the position they want to rope and the computer will draw a partner. DUCKS OFF - When a steer ducks quickly to the right or left. ELIMINATOR - This is the term used to describe a steer that proves extremely difficult to rope and pushes the team close to elimination. FAIR CATCH - Also called a legal catch. In team roping the header has to catch the steer around the horns, head or neck. FISHING - When the roper misses the first throw but ends up catching the steer either by accident or by flipping the rope precisely, it’s called fishing. FLAGMAN -The flagman is the event official who signals the end of the round. FULL GO-ROUNDS - A full go-round is a round where every roper entered gets the opportunity to rope. GROUND MONEY - Is a term that originally meant competitors received their entry fees back as a prize consideration. It has, in recent years, been interpreted to mean multiples of the entry fees. HANDICAP – In order to level the playing field in a competition, handicap offers seconds off the time of teams of ropers whose classification numbers are lower than they division in which they entered.
