That’s a phrase I find myself saying quite a bit these days. Why do I say the phrase, what does it really mean and what memories am I transported to? A place I go to right away is, sitting with family and cranking out some ice cream. Everyone taking their turn, someone adding ice to the bucket and another person sprinkling the salt on, all while listening to the stories being told. Try to imagine carving out one hour today without an electronic device? Another memory that always brings a smile to my face is thoughts of spending weeks in Wyoming on horseback herding sheep from town to the mountains, living in sheep wagons, fishing, hanging out with cousins and ending up at the Wyoming State Fair Rodeo. Yes sir those were the days. The thing about “The Good Ole Days” is, I don’t always have to go back many years. Having 5 boys, we were involved in many sports and those were “The Good Ole Days” to me. Sitting with other parents watching our kids play ball or in many cases coaching the team, then always going to eat after the games as a group, ahh “The Good Ole Days”. Even more recently those days were traveling to watch the boys play college sports and spending the weekend with them and their friends. “The Good Ole Days” for me, were never about the economy or politics. No way could I tell you who the Secretary of State was in 2006, but I can tell you what I was doing. I was in the stands in Santa Barbara watching my son’s first college soccer game and seeing his shaved head from a freshman ritual. Even closer to the present was being in Riverside, Calif watching my youngest son’s first college volleyball game and thinking, his athletic skill came from his Mom. The one thing that resonates with me is this phrase “The Good Ole Days”, nearly always brings positive memories. Negative ones seem harder to remember. In fact, I think we look better in our own minds and what we’ve done is probably told better than what really happened. I’m not saying that I embellish the ole days, well maybe a little, but I think my stories are getting better! Let’s see, where do I want my mind to go next? One thing for sure, it will be a positive thought. What are your thoughts about “The Good Ole Days”? If you email me your Good Ole Days memories, we’ll print a few in next month’s issue. We always want to hear from you and strive to make this “YOUR” magazine. As Casey Kasem used to say on the radio “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars”. P.S. I just had my wife read this to see what she thought and she reminded me about our wedding day. Maybe I better rewrite this and put it at the top…Nahh in today’s world I just don’t have the time, oh I wish for “THE GOOD OLE DAYS”. Mike Barna, Publisher mbarna@963realcountry.com “
