Organizes Mining Company She did well enough to organize the Midnight Sun Mining Company in the Koyukuk district with herself as trustee, Fifty thousand shares in the company went on sale for $2 a share. The stock certificates stated that Midnight Sun had “no offices” and “no officers.” Nellie, who was nearly 80, was planning on bringing in some heavier equipment to work her claims under the Midnight Sun banner when she realized she was developing chronic health problems. She went to Fairbanks to seek advice, then to Juneau and then to Seattle for medical help. She finally was sent to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Victoria. This was the same hospital she had helped fund more than 40 years earlier. She was under the care of her beloved Sisters of St. Anne and Dr. W.T. Barrett, who had been her doctor years earlier when she was in Dawson. Nellie died after several weeks in St. Joseph’s on January 4, 1925, of unresolved pneumonia. She is buried at the Ross Bay Cemetary in Victoria. Only a year before her death, Nellie Cashman had made a 750-mile dog sled trip through the snow on her return to Koyukuk with a driver. She made the trek on her own two feet at the age of 80. Nellie Cashman had left her mark over a half-century over most of the west, from Tombstone to Koyukuk north of the Arctic Circle. She had made and lost several small fortunes and gave away much of what she made. From Tombstone to Dawson and beyond, there were many a miner down on his luck and hungry who found a warm welcome and a hot plate of food at one of Nellie Cashman’s mining camp restaurants. She did so well in Dawson that she would even give a down and out miner a free cigar or free tobacco for his pipe after she fed him. Small wonder Nellie Cashman was revered and became a legend among mining men everywhere in the west. REALCOUNTRYLEGENDS963.COM DOWNLOAD THE FREE 96.3 REAL COUNTRY APP with you wherever you go
