These days, I’m locked and loaded with all of them and chances are you are as well. The pleasure I used to gain from them and the satisfaction they gave me is now a burden. On a personal note, having a radio station and magazine puts me really deep into the use of these devices. At least I am being told we need to have all of it to keep in constant contact. The other night I watched a TV show, which told me that the devices are addictive and that they keep inventing more ways to make them more and more addictive. My wife and I recently had a conversation about her notification sounds going off. All evening they would send alerts for everything coming into her phone and computer. For me it was irritating and I politely conveyed my thoughts, she accepted it well and the next evening it was quiet until mine went off. UGH. At that point, I went in and turned OFF all my notification sounds except text messaging. The reason for the text notifications has to do with the radio station and they are important. The other day, in an article, I read that you can pay hundreds of dollars to go to a week- long camp called “Digital Detox.” As a culture, we are slowly realizing that our social media and digital technologies have made us very tied to them. What is happening to us? Even when we try to rest, we are restless, and we reach for our phones or tablets because our bodies and our imaginations have forgotten what else there is to reach for. What would happen if you reached out for a meaningful conversation with the person right in front of you, oh I forgot, why would you do that since you can text them. Maybe you like the dialed down human interaction factor. Really? I don’t think anything beats a big hug and letting someone know face to face, that you care.
