December 2018 50 Glendale Equestrian Club RIDE REPORT By Robert Piekow,… Publicist gecriders.com Adventures at Boyd Ranch A visit to Boyd Ranch outside of Wickenburg is always an adventure, but this last trip even more so due to weather issues such as rain and more rain. The weekend event started on Friday with a great ride down into the Hassayampa River bed up to Box Canyon. The weather was mild and the horses and riders enjoyed wading down the river through one or two inches of cool water and sand. Who could guess that twenty-four hours later the same one or two inches would turn into one or two feet of raging river? Back at camp after the river ride, there was another ride for some of the more adventurous members while the rest of us stayed and made preparations for dinner. As darkness fell around the campfire we all enjoyed a nice potluck with contributions from the club members, a couple hours around the fire swapping stories and enjoying each other's friendship. Then we retired to bed in anticipation of the big ride on Saturday. The next morning dawned cool and cloudy with the threat of rain but not to be deterred, we all saddled up and headed out with the powder room as our destination. We had been riding up the dry river bed for a couple of miles when the sky began spitting a few drops of rain. The rain slowly began growing in intensity until the horses as if given a command, turned their tails to the wind and rain and as much as said: "this is enough." Not much to do then except turn back to camp as it was pretty obvious that the rain was not going to let up. Ten sopping wet riders had the rest of the day to try and dry out. The rain finally eased off late in the afternoon. The grounds were pretty muddy, but with the efforts of Bill and his brother Carlo along with help from all the club members we managed to put together a veritable feast of stuffed pork chops and fixin’s to go with, so we ate like royalty as usual. Sunday morning things were looking pretty good as far as the weather so another ride was in the works. As it turned out we couldn't have left Boyd Ranch anyway because the road had washed out and would not be passable for several hours. We had a very enjoyable ride, first checking on the river which was still flowing pretty good but not raging as it was on Friday afternoon. We then went northward for a way through some newly washed desert, and everything clean and smelled fresh. An enjoyable weekend in spite of the rain and obstacles encountered. That which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.
